Laboratory
Spring 2001
12:00-1:50 & 2:00-3:50 Wednesday Room 237
Teaching Assistant: Kristi Argenbright
Office: SR 250 ( 257-6279 or Geology Office 257-7270)
Office Hours: Tues/Thurs 11:00-12:30
E-mail:kaargenbrigh@hotmail.com
Purpose:
During
these weekly brief, yet highly informative gatherings throughout the semester,
you will be given the opportunity to reinforce those concepts learned in lecture,
and gain a working knowledge of their practical applications in todays
highly dynamic world.
Materials/Assignments:
For each
lab period, you will need to bring the lab text, writing utensil, and calculator.
A schedule for the assigned labs is provided and assigned labs should be read
prior to the laboratory period. I will call on students during class to ask
for explanations.
Marks:
The laboratory
grade will be counted as 25% of your final mark in Geol 10143. Your laboratory
grade will be determined as follows:
1) 2 Lab Exams (66.6%)
Exam 1 (33.3%) covering labs 1-6 Wednesday, March 7, 2001
Exam 2 (33.3%) covering labs 7-12 Wednesday, May 2, 2001
2) Weekly Quizzes (33.3%)
Quizzes will be given at the end of each lab period over the material covered
in that particular session. Note! 11 quizzes will be administered
and the lowest quiz grade shall be dropped. However, a missed quiz because of
an unexcused absence will result in a zero and will NOT be dropped.
Additional Points: Through out the semester, I will often give you copies of
articles to read that relate to a particular lab topic. You are not required
to read the articles, but they will add to your understanding of the environmental
problems, issues, and philosophy that we shall be studying. To encourage you
to read these articles, I will pull information from them to include as bonus
questions on the quizzes and exams.
Polices:
Cheating:
Simple-Dont do it. Cheating will not be tolerated, and if observed, the
maximum allowable punishment will be exercised. All computers should be returned
to the desktop screen during quizzes. If not, I will assume you are cheating.
Attendance:
I shall
take attendance at the beginning of each class and I expect you to be on time
for class. Labs may only be made up only if you have a university excused absence
for the particular lab period missed. You must present a written excuse to make
up a lab. Missed labs must be made up prior to the lab exam covering those labs
(see test dates above). You are expected to assume the responsibility of making-up
the missed lab. Make-up labs will be held on the Saturday morning before each
exam from 9:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m.

A Final Note:
This course was always one of my favorites as an undergraduate student. I hope all of you do well in this course, and remember I am here to help you understand and enjoy environmental science. Please feel free to speak with me after class or during my office hours if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
