Dr. Nowell Donovan




		Publications In the late eighteenth century a certain Scott sat down in the garret of his castle of Scotstarvit and proceeded to write a highly alliterative masterpiece entitled: "The Staggering State of Scottish Statesmen, by Scott of Scotstarvit". One wonders how many times he swallowed a dram and roared with laughter when he thought about his title. He described the book as; "A homily on life's nothingness, reinforced by examples." My contribution to this homily is laid out below. Some of this work is OK, some is tedious, some simple-minded. Most of it is, or will be, lost in the frenzied world of modern scientific publication. A few years ago, while I was still in my forties, I spent a weekend at Hay on Wye in the Welsh Borders. Hay is a tiny town known to bibliophiles as the second hand book capital of the world. I was horrified to find one of my manuscripts, a paper in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, offered for sale.
